Birches (gallery anniversary 2020)
March 11 - April 2, 2020 Preview Tuesday, March 10, 6-8 pm

The Birch Tree Gallery is celebrating its three year anniversary, having first opened its doors on March 10th, 2017. Three years later, it feels like the appropriate moment to ask the artists who have already exhibited with the gallery, or who will appear in the future shows, to participate in an exhibition devoted to the birch tree.
The featured artist – Kenris MacLeod - creates her work using the medium of free motions machine embroidery. Using the sewing machine needle as a pencil or brush, she draws and paints with thread, freehand, depicting the shapes and textures of the natural world - focusing on trees, and often birches, as her subject matter. Trees are our giant protectors, they are beings that defend us, hold the earth together. Kenris’s work is an investigation of her relationship with this notion, how we depend on them but how we are often merciless in their destruction. Their presence dwarfs us, and if we do register at all, we are like insects, endlessly busy, leading manic, futile lives, we come and go, and those trees we choose to protect, or ignore, live on, silent and dignified.
