Leonie Rutter
Whilst working as a graduate Engineer in Aberdeen in the early 90’s, I joined pottery evening classes and rapidly fell in love with the versatile medium of clay. Over the years I continued to explore throwing, hand building and firing techniques, until I became a full time artist in 2017. I now specialise in naked clay and alternative firing techniques such as porcelain inlay and raku.
My work is strongly influenced by the cultures of my native countries of UK and New Zealand and the Celtic and Maori spiral motif (symbolising life, strength and peace) can often be seen in my more sculptural forms. The surface decoration of my work also reflects my love of the sea & mountains, whether it be the pure whiteness of snow ridges, the rich beauty of autumn colours, or the complex aqua shades of the ocean.
Combining my artistic and engineering skills enables me to find balance and harmony in complex forms and to achieve a variety of surface finishes using different firing techniques. Each of my pieces is unique, by design and by the nature of the making and firing processes I use.
