Gillian McMillan
I was first introduced to clay and the potter’s wheel at age 16 and was hooked. Over the years I have used various clays and techniques, but went back to porcelain after reading Mary Rogers. While experimenting I found that copper carbonate bleeds in to the glaze and a third firing with metallic lustre produces some lovely iridescent effects. I like combining glazed and unglazed textures. I also enjoy using Earthstone clay for hand-building sculptural pieces. My inspiration comes from nature including rocks, insects, sea, and beach life.
Gillian attended Wolverhampton Polytechnic which was a hand making degree, then North Staffordshire Polytechnic studying industrial ceramics. Two very different approaches to clay making. Over the years she has used various clays and techniques. Although not an easy clay to use I went back to porcelain after reading Mary Rogers' book.
