Living in East Lothian, Scotland, my work is inspired by nature and the beautiful countryside around me. For me, painting explores the abstract values I find within the landscape, its ever-changing light, the weather and tide. I work initially from sketches I make as I walk the coast and fields. Later, working from my garden studio, I create small colour studies and then finally larger paintings in acrylic and mixed media, layering colour and remembered shapes to evoke a sense of the place and my experience of being within it. The finished paintings evolve into semi-abstract pieces, with their beginnings in real places and times. A love of colour drives my painting practice.
Annie worked for many years in the NHS as a therapist with vulnerable children, using play and art as a medium to support communication and processing of difficult feelings. Retiring early allowed her time to pursue her art practice consistently, splitting her time between working in the studio and travelling, which has become an important source of inspiration for painting. She has been studying for the last few years with Paintbox Art School in Cockenzie, East Lothian.
