Taking organic or biological forms as my starting point, I gradually develop them, all the while drawing on my own direct, emotional instincts. During this creative process, I dig deep into my own stories, memories, experience and emotions, imbuing the sculpture with meaning – recording my own journey through time and space, both imagined and real. I have a deep interest in First Nation peoples, particularly the intimate relationship they have with the natural world, reflected in their art and artefacts. The stone contains its own memories of archaic landscapes and prehistoric seasons, and whilst carving, I am constantly aware of time passing under my hands. In the end, I want to create a work whose hidden meaning resonates with the viewer and encourages that basic desire in all of us to reach out and touch.
After a career in the electricity industry in England, then running a small craft business in the Scottish Highlands, the urge to create and communicate in a more meaningful way become so overwhelming that she was impelled to take action and retrain. Over the past ten years Ann has attended many courses and master-classes in stone and wood carving, acquiring, developing and extending the technical skills that now enable her to express her ideas. Ann lives and works in the coastal Scottish Highlands, surrounded by the natural beauty and wild weather that inspire her sculptural forms. Her work was selected for Sculpt at Kew, a contemporary sculpture event in September 2017, held inside Kew Botanical Gardens, London that showcased the work of 35 British and international sculptors.
