The Spending almost 25 years of my life on the West Coast has strongly influenced my work. I have been spoiled for the presence of form and surfaces. Even the ever-changing skies and seascapes fuelled my desire to create a feeling of rich depth, in the glazed surfaces I produce on my vessels. This is impregnated in my practice.
The work in this show is hand-built, high- fired stoneware. It is fired in a gas kiln to temperatures around 1250C. I sometimes glaze fire the pieces 2-3 times to obtain the depth and colours I produce by layering different glazes and oxides over each other, allowing the form to dictate the outcome. Sometimes I feel more like a ‘medium’ for the forms I create, as I allow them to grow into the world through my hands.
Allison studied at Edinburgh College of Art in 2002. She was in the last class of Ceramics course that no longer exists. Alison is passionate about teaching. When she lived on the West Coast she taught in local schools such as Applecross and Ullapool. Her commitment to education is also expressed in advocating for training facilities for ceramics. After moving from to East Lothian, Allison now teaches in Edinburgh Ceramic Workshop and in Bathgate.
