Tony King
I use local Scottish hardwoods, and sometimes more exotic imported timbers, and find great joy as the form of the item begins to emerge from the pile of shavings. It is almost hypnotic, and I can lose all track of time. Inspiration for the shapes comes from many sources, including Japanese ceramic items.
Twenty years ago Tony King retired from his career as an avionics engineer and started to fulfil and exploit a lifelong interest in and a desire to work with wood. He began to develop his wood-turning skills from his workshop in Leith. Initially, most of his work involved making equipment and objects for artists/makers, and any wood-turning involved was purely functional. About five years ago Tony discovered the joy of creating aesthetic objects in wood. He uses native British woods, and occasionally ‘exotic’ species from further afield, making simple shapes. This simplicity allows the inherent natural qualities and beauty of the wood to shine through with the minimum of embellishment and fuss.
