Fringe exhibition 2022
'Ascending Light'
August 3 - 27, 2022
Peter Davis Shetland, watercolour
Catherine Carr , Inverness, crocheted and knitted glass
Peter Davis works from the almost deserted location of Silwick in West Mainland of Shetland, where he is surrounded by unobstructed seaviews and dramatic cliffs. A master of transparent layers of watercolours, he brings a symphony of soft hues, celebrating the ever changing and temperamental Shetland weather. Catherine Carr knits and crochets glass vessels from her studio in the Scottish Highlands. Inspired by the role of women in textiles, she pushes the technical boundaries of glass and creates iconic knit patterns in glass. She is currently inspired by the patterns of Shetland Lacework Shawls. To see Catherine's works in the exhibition 'Ascending Light' click HERE
''I had originally considered calling this exhibition One Square Mile to reflect the small area of subject matter that initially inspired the paintings. I live and work in the relatively isolated community of Silwick, a community now of two, though well inhabited in the distant past. It’s set in a bay near the most southerly tip of Shetland mainland’s westside. Moving here three years ago had a profound effect on my work probably due to the proximity to cliffs and a coastline in battle with the wild Atlantic. This manifested itself in a darkened palette, freer areas of flowing paint and increased use of chalk or pastel. As ever I paint in watercolour which for me is the most natural medium for reflecting the natural world. Weather has always inspired my painting but since my move it has increased as the windows of my studio frame a constantly changing light and landscape. It provides an endless inspiration as I re-present the elements. I’m reminded of that wonderful quote from Paul Cezanne to Emile Bernard from Aix-en-Provence…. “I could be busy for months without changing my place, simply leaning a little more to the right or left.” Peter Davis
